While a self-storage unit is essentially an empty space that is purpose-built to have things stored inside, there are some rules. The most common reasons people rent a storage unit is due to excess items at home, sensitive documents for a business, or valuable vehicle protection from the public.

This blog will be your guideline for understanding what can and cannot be stored within a self-storage facility. While different facilities will have different rules, Safeguard Storage has ensured that virtually anything can be stored within. There are a handful of goods that cannot be stored within, and we will go through each category and explain why it is either unsafe or not ethical.

Why Should I NOT STORE Food In A Storage Unit?

While we strongly advise against storing food in a storage unit, this rule mainly pertains to food that is perishable. There may be an argument to make against canned goods or items that have a very long period of remaining fresh.

If you do have any questions regarding the acceptance of food of any kind, our friendly team is more than happy to talk you through the rules and regulations. For the most part, however, we advise that you refrain from storing any food to ensure there are no issues surrounding rotting, pests or infestation.

Why Should I NOT STORE Animals or Plants In A Storage Unit?

While storing plants may have some grey areas, animals should be quite self-explanatory. There is a lack of oxygen and light within the storage units when the door is closed; any animal within would likely die or get very ill.

Plants, however, do not require as much love as an animal, yet they are still entirely dependent on light and oxygen. Again, any plants that are intended to be kept alive will not survive long-term in a self-storage unit. Additionally, we cannot risk organic material being present in the units as it may attract insects, rodents and other pests. Safeguard Storage draws a hardline on all animals and plants.

Why Should I NOT STORE Chemicals In A Storage Unit?

Chemicals are prohibited from most storage units unless they’re specifically built to accommodate them. At Safeguard Storage, we have zero tolerance for chemicals as the risk of storing them is too great. While we consider the safety of your other belongings, we must also consider the safety of the facility in general.

Any corrosive or hazardous chemicals present on the site pose a risk to our other units, not just your own. We have no way to deal with a spillage or leak if these chemicals were to get out. Ensuring that you get the best experience possible is our priority, which is why we refrain from allowing any chemicals within the storage units.

What CAN I Store In A Storage Unit?

PERSONAL STORAGE:

For the most part, you can store anything in your self-storage unit. Our current customers store a variety of different personal items for both the short and long term. For example, there are several storage units that have items within for seasonal purposes. There may be some clothes or equipment that serve no purpose in summer or winter, so they’re kept in pristine condition without occupying unnecessary space in your home or office.

BUSINESS STORAGE:

Additionally, there many of our self-storage renters are storing on behalf of a business. Many items stored within are inventory, sensitive documentation or furniture/equipment. While you may be operating a business elsewhere, you may be restricted to your space. A self-storage unit is a perfect short-term solution for your company as you seek a larger office space to store your products/documents/office supplies.

VEHICLE STORAGE:

There are a few reasons why someone would enquire about our vehicle-related storage. The most common reason is a customer owns an exceptionally valuable vehicle that they don’t have the resources to provide around-the-clock protection. Our highly-secure, fully-alarmed, and 24/7 HD CCTV premises provide our loyal customers with perfect protection for their pride and joy.
