Self-storage is much more than tossing items in a unit and then leaving; you need to make sure you’re organised. Particularly with clothes, it’s important to make sure that you keep your wearables fresh. How can you do this exactly? This blog will make your storage life an absolute breeze and ensure your clothing remains as fresh as possible.

Follow this article to get a more thorough understanding of the steps you can take to keep your items fresh and secure. Safeguard Storage prides itself on offering dry, secure and cost-effective storage units – the perfect place for all your precious/excess clothes and accessories.

Organise Your Clothes Based On The Season

While it’s currently summer, you may have no need for your winter clothes. Instead of keeping them in a dusty closet, waiting for June to roll over, why not invest in effective self-storage to keep your clothes fresher than ever? At Safeguard Storage, many of our customers use our highly-protected storage units to keep seasonal clothes.

When winter does come around, you’ll be able to do a quick switch of items from home to the storage unit and vice-versa. Once the temperatures get colder and summer is on the way out, you’ll be able to keep your togs, jandals, tank tops, beach gear, and so much more kept in your storage unit.

Only Store Clothes That Are 100% Dry

What might seem like a pedantic suggestion, it’s actually very important to ensure all clothes are dry before storage. While we do provide dry, affordable and secure storage units, bringing in damp items (specifically clothing) can set the scene for mould growth and unpleasant odours.

As a step to ensure only dry clothes are stored, give your winter/summer clothes one last wash and hang them out to dry. Once dry, you know that they are ready to be formatted and stored in one of Safeguard Storage’s many self-storage units.

Format Your Storage Unit To Maximise Storage Potential

Depending on what items you have stored in your storage unit, the frequency at which you visit may change. Either way, you should still have your storage unit structured to ensure that the most commonly retrieved items are closer to the front. This is also why your piles or boxes/bags/containers should be organised in categories.

If most of your items are clothes, organising based on body parts may be easier to navigate. Have shoes in one section, pants in another, shirts/jackets and then finally, hats and accessories elsewhere. Drawing up a map is also an effective means of ensuring that you’re aware of exactly where all items of clothing are at any given time.

Install Dessicants If You Are Concerned About Humidity

We can understand our customers wish to have total peace of mind when storing their belongings at Safeguard Storage. Desiccants are substances which extract moisture from the air to ensure humidity isn’t a cause for concern. If your clothes get wet or damp, they may get damaged and exude an unpleasant smell that will likely require them to be washed before use.

Desiccants come in the form of multiple products. You may be familiar with the packs of silica gel which come in the packaging of several products, from shoes to food. Desiccant sticks are also a common product which can be very effective for larger spaces that you fear may be at risk of moisture.

While we do allow desiccants to be used in our storage units, we can promise that every self-storage unit we have available throughout all branches will come 100% dry.
